Princess Diana had "trepidation" about her future single life ahead of her divorce from King Charles being finalised, a newly unearthed letter has revealed.

Diana and Charles, the then Prince of Wales, officially divorced in August 1996, four years after they separated and just one year before Diana's shocking death at the age of 36. When the couple were married, Diana held hundreds of patronages and other royal roles with a vast array of charities and organisations.

However, when she officially divorced, she was forced to give up many of these roles and relinquish all her military appointments. And now a letter has emerged written by Diana resigning from one of her patronages, where she opens up about the future.

The letter, dated July 1996, was sent to the chairman of the Royal New Zealand Foundation for The Blind, explaining why she was resigning as patron of the charity. And in the letter, obtained by The Telegraph, she admits to her "trepidation" about the future.

Offering her resignation, she writes: "As you know, my personal circumstances, in particular my marriage to The Prince of Wales, have been the subject of detailed conjecture in recent months, and this will soon be formalised in the normal legal manner.

"Although I am embarking upon the future with hope, I also do so with some trepidation since there are a number of matters which I shall need to resolve."

Diana continued: "As I seek to re-organise my life it will not be possible for me to provide you with the right level of commitment and I feel that there may be someone else better suited to support you in all that you do."

The letter is now set to be auctioned as part of the Legends: Hollywood and Royalty sale being held by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies in Beverly Hills next month. The letter will be up for sale alongside several of her outfits as well as more than 1,000 rare objects synonymous with famous cultural figures.

Among the outfits up for sale is a vibrant red Bruce Oldfield gown that Diana wore in November 1991 at the London premiere of the movie Hot Shots!, which is expected to fetch up to £318,000. Also on sale is a Catherine Walker strapless gown and a black and jade dress by the same designer that Diana wore in Toronto in 1986. That is expected to go for up to £159,000.

Darren Julien, founder of the auction house, said: "We look forward to celebrating the beloved people's princess, one of the most photographed women in the world, who changed the monarchy forever and whose persona continues to captivate the public and Hollywood today through tributes and film and television works about her life."
