Strictly Come Dancing's Shirley Ballas devastated by death of close friend
Strictly Come Dancing star Shirley Ballas has been left heartbroken by the sudden death of a close friend who also worked with her as a costume designer.
Taking to social media on Sunday night, the 62-year-old dancing judge shared her sadness over the news of designer Luca Sartori’s death at the age of 54. News of Luca’s death had been broken by his partner, designer Vesa Hietala, who explained that he had died suddenly on Sunday.
Vesa wrote in an Instagram post of his own: “Yesterday I lost the love of my life, my best friend and my partner of 26 years. Luca had no known health conditions, but had a seizure of some kind and his heart just stopped. The paramedics tried to revive him for 50 minutes, but sadly he never regained consciousness. I have no words to describe my pain and loss.” Shirley was among the first to offer condolences, writing in response to Vesa’s post: “Omg I’m so so sorry for your loss.”

Costume designer Luca Sartori died suddenly on Sunday (Instagram)She then shared a photo of Luca on her own feed alongside a heartfelt message celebrating his life. She wrote: “Very saddening news for our industry today. A very treasured loved one was lost. My dear friend Luca.
“I have known Luca and Vesa many years. We have been there for each other when things sometimes got tough in the industry. Luca always made me laugh. He had a unique way of making you feel special. A hug from him helped everything. Those strong Italian arms of reassurance for a woman were unforgettable.”

She continued: “I’ll always remember having fittings for my evening wear, they were always a treat. Listening to your design and rhinestone ideas throughout the years were my favourite. Your relationship with Vesa was the envy of many. A kind and caring duo who loved everything about each other. My condolences to @vesahietala and all of his family and friends. Sending you huge love and hugs at this difficult time.”
She added: “I’m going to remember the memories I have for many years and I know many people will carry you in their hearts. Rest In Peace Luca, you were one in a million that has been taken far too soon.”
Former Strictly contestant Michelle Visage shared her own message to Vesa, writing: “Oh honey I am so very sorry for this great loss….” Professional dancer Luba Mushtak added: “Cant believe it - sending all my love and strength.” And Strictly star Katya Jones wrote: “I can’t believe it! I am so sorry for your loss. Look after yourself Vesa. Thoughts and prayer to you, the family and friends.”
