A top BBC Breakfast presenter has given birth to a beautiful baby boy and shared the first adorable photo of the tot. Broadcaster Emma Vardy announced her news earlier this morning, sharing a snap of the little one only 'a few hours old'.

"Presenting my best breaking news ever," the 42-year-old presenter wrote on Instagram. "Baby boy Jago Fionn is here. At just a few hours old, playing a little camera shy.

"Huge thanks to the dedicated & talented midwives & doctors at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, for looking after us so well. Smitten & so in love." The star's update has already attracted more than 350 likes as she shared a sweet selfie from the hospital bed, holding her newborn to one side.

It was earlier this month that Emma announced her immediate departure from the BBC. She had been standing in for co-anchor Nina Warhurst who was on maternity leave after giving birth to her third child. But Emma had to explain that she was also heading off on maternity leave.

Taking to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Emma was glowing as she explained her absence from the programme. In a picture shared from Northern Ireland, the star was sitting on top of two launderette-style washing machines as she hinted, at the time, that she didn't know the gender of her child.

Holding up a green and red t-shirt, Emma looked sensational as she showcased her blossoming bump in a figure-hugging lime green dress. Captioning her upload, Emma penned: "Well that's me off on mat leave!! Resigned to an eternity of housewife chores & dirty laundry.

"Career girl out. (And if u believe that you'll believe anything). Celebrated the start of this new chapter with cocktails at this perfectly disguised speakeasy!! #TheWashhouse."

Prior to announcing her break from screens Emma kept fans updated on her pregnancy and revealed that activities such as surfing were becoming increasingly difficult. Sharing a picture of herself holding her surfboard on a stunning beach, she said: "Well folks it's definitely getting a bit harder to balance….extra cargo hitching a ride!!

"Still managing to catch a few waves though. Beautiful weekend in Co Sligo, and a very exciting summer ahead!! #paddlingfortwo #babyonboard." Earlier this month, Emma was in the gym as she prepared to give birth. She asked her followers: "Ladies I’d like to hear your experiences of hitting the gym during pregnancy?

"Runners too, what conflicting views, myths, or advice did you hear? Do we get enough guidance on exercise during the 9 months? Filming a piece for @BBCBreakfast about this."
