Strictly star left furious at producers' cruel jibe after filming BBC show

Strictly Come Dancing star Angela Scanlon has slammed producers over a cruel remark after she was allegedly told how to dress to be a 'bit of glamour' on a hit BBC show.

The 39-year-old Irish TV star, who is set to appear on the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing, shared her horror after claiming she dubbed 'the t*ts and teeth' of BBC Two show Robot Wars, which she hosted alongside Dara O’Briain between 2016 to 2018.

Angela - who presents Your Home Made Perfect on BBC Two - says she was left "furious" after she overheard the cruel comment and found out they wanted her to be “a bit of glamour” on the family-friendly game show.

Recalling the incident on the Fashion As A Force For Good podcast, she expressed: "This person said, "So the show is Dara O’Briain and this chick Angela Scanlon - she is the t*ts and teeth."' She continued: “I remember being absolutely furious. I was like, ‘There is no way in hell I am walking around in an industrial estate for two weeks in a mini-skirt’.”

As she filmed for the 2016 series, which was set in a warehouse in Scotland, the presenter claims she sat down with producers to discuss what outfit she would wear on the show. Angela suggests she was persuaded to pull off a glamorous image however, she disagreed with the idea. “I was like, ‘That is not important’. They said, ‘Yea I know, I am just thinking we need a bit of glam.' It felt so reductive and so presumptuous that I’d arrive with my lippy on and legs out to entertain the lads and that was my value.”

“This was maybe eight years ago. I remember being absolutely furious but really glad that I had been given the heads up because it kind of confirmed my thoughts," she added.

Since 2016, she has appeared on The One Show and has regularly presented in the absence of Alex Jones. In 2018, Scanlon hosted her own BBC Radio 2 show on Sunday mornings for two years and also covered for radio host Sara Cox while she replaced Chris Evans on his Radio 2 Breakfast Show.

Angela is set to appear on Strictly Come Dancing next month, where she will be waltzing across the dance floor in hopes of impressing the judges alongside famous faces such as Les Dennis, Amanda Abbington, Angela Rippon, Layton Williams, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Eddie Kadi, Zara McDermott, Adam Thomas and others.

The Mirror has contacted the BBC for comment.
