For many of us who like to put our brain power to the test on a daily basis, there's nothing better than sitting down in front of the TV and watching one of the many quiz shows that air in the afternoons and evenings. Some shows are tricker than others, but challenging yourself to get all of the questions right can be a fun activity, even if you have no desire to actually apply to appear on the programme yourself.

One of the toughest shows on telly right now is ITV's The 1% Club, which is hosted by Lee Mack and features 15 logic-inspired questions of increasing difficulty, from one that 90% of people can answer, right the way down to a gruelling question that just 1% will get right. And one question from the show is going viral online as people can't seem to work out the answer.

The question comes from the section of the show that is supposed to be answerable by 10% of people, and it has been leaving people online completely stumped as they get tripped up by the wording of the problem. As read out by host Lee Mack, the question was: "A bat and a ball cost £1.10 in total. The bat costs £1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?"

For many people who have tried answering the question since it began going viral on TikTok, it seems as though the obvious answer should be 10p, especially when £1 is mentioned in the question, and you already know the total cost is £1.10. But that's the nasty trap that the question writers want you to fall into, and it's not the right answer.

If the ball was 10p, then the bat would have to be £1.10 on its own as it's a total of £1 more than the ball, making the cost of both items £1.20. So if your first instinct was also to go for 10p, then go back to the drawing board and think again. Don't be too disheartened though, as other people thought the same.

One person wrote online: "Why can't I wrap my brain around it not being 10p?," while another added: "I've seen the answer and it still doesn't make sense to me," and a third said: "This question threw my hangover into overdrive."

We'll admit that the question is a bit of a head-scratcher, but if you break it down into sections then you can work it out without too much trouble. In actual fact, the answer to the question is 5p. If the ball costs 5p, then the bat would be priced at £1.05, making the total cost of both items £1.10, which is the condition set in the question.

If you found that question too easy, why not try this one from the same show - except only 1% of people are able to answer it. Or, if you want to challenge yourself to a different kind of quiz show, then why not try to solve these 15 questions that stumped the Eggheads?
