The Dallas Cowboys will reportedly release one of their quarterbacks after acquiring Trey Lance.

A trade was announced on August 25 between the San Francisco 49ers for the quarterback. Lance had been vying for the starting spot with the Niners alongside Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.

However, Lance will now be playing his football in Dallas after the Cowboys swapped a future fourth-round pick for the 23-year-old. Lance had been the No.3 overall pick for the Niners in 2021 but has played just eight games across his first two seasons in the NFL.

With the Cowboys acquiring a new QB, it means there is not much room on the roster for four quarterbacks. Dak Prescott is the expected starter in Dallas, with Cooper Rush and Will Grier all taking part during pre-season.

According to the Dallas Morning News, it will be Grier who will be released by the Cowboys following the trade for Lance. It has been claimed that team officials from the Cowboys spoke to Grier about the decision before news of the Lance trade was made public on Friday night.

The article also states that Grier will play the full game for the team in the final preseason game of the summer. The Cowboys take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night at the AT&T Stadium looking to win the first game of pre-season.

Grier had previously played in both of the Cowboys' two pre-season games so far. He threw two touchdown passes in a 28-23 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars with one interception, but no TD passes and one interception in a 22-14 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.

What happens next for Grier remains to be seen, with the 28-year-old arriving in September 2021 after leaving the Carolina Panthers. The No.100 overall pick by the Panthers in the 2019 NFL Draft has played just two games in the NFL, both games in his rookie year in the league.

Grier will end his Cowboys career having not taken to the field for a single snap across his two years with the franchise. But it has been reported that the quarterback will be on the field for every offensive play for Dallas in the pre-season game against the Raiders as part of his farewell.

The quarterback will enter free agency, but there is not much time before NFL teams have to make an important decision. Tuesday, August 29 marks the deadline for every team to confirm its 53-man rosters before the start of the new season, which could hinder Grier’s chances of signing for a new team for 2023.
