Erik ten Hag has backed Bruno Fernandes amid widespread criticism of the midfielder's leadership so far this season.

The Portuguese playmaker was handed the armband in the summer, after the Dutch boss opted to strip Harry Maguire of the honour. It appeared the obvious choice, given Fernandes had led the side out on ample occasions in the 2022/23 campaign, including twice in Wembley finals, with Maguire struggling for a first team place.

But following the 1-0 win over Wolves, the volatility that so often accompanies the star was apparent in the defeat at Spurs last Saturday. He was booked by Michael Oliver in the first half for dissent, and then demanded an apology from referees' chief Jon Moss after the game after he felt his side were denied a certain penalty.

Critics have since weighed in, with Chris Sutton in particular launching a scathing attack on the 28-year-old: " Bruno Fernandes first and foremost needs to sort himself out, his team out, before looking at referees and their decisions," he said. "Bruno Fernandes for me shouldn't be captain of Manchester United, absolutely not, he's not a leader. That basically sums him up."

Sutton wasn't alone in voicing that view. talkSPORT pundits Andy Townsend and Ally McCoist also questioned his credentials this week, arguing he wasn't cut from the same cloth as previous United skippers like Roy Keane or Bryan Robson.

But addressing the media ahead of a clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon, Ten Hag defended his key man. And he also argued Fernandes was well within his rights to question the decision that cost his side dear in north London.

"Of course, I back him and I think he has to make his point," Ten Hag said, when asked about the outburst. "It’s justified, it’s a clear penalty. You can express that. Also, don’t get distracted by it. Keep focusing on your job.

"Last season when he did it (captaining United), he did brilliantly. Now as well. He’s an inspiration, an example for the team, he has the personality. He is a very good captain."

The Dutchman's words seemingly quell any speculation he'll soon be looking to relieve the player of his duties. But he also knows the pressure will mount on both manager and captain should they fail to beat Forest at Old Trafford.

It's not the only headache plaguing Ten Hag this week though. He's set to be without left-back Luke Shaw and new signing Mason Mount for the foreseeable future after both picked up injuries, while Rasmus Hojlund is not yet fit to make his debut after picking up a back problem in pre-season.
