A tiny village has been hailed the 'Jewel of the Highlands' after being made famous for featuring in the The Wicker Man film.

But those visiting aren't only going for a taste of Hollywood or its palm trees, peaceful Plockton officially has the best fish and chips in the whole on Britain. Situated on a sheltered bay with crystal-clear water, the inlet on Loch Carron has atmosphere as well as spectacular settings. There's a sandy beach ten minutes' walk away, too.

It is loved by sailing enthusiasts, especially during its annual regatta, and is becoming more and more popular as the cost of trips abroad rocket post Covid. It's not just a must see during the summer months either, with cosy pubs a plenty and fantastic restaurants to enjoy.

You don't even need a table to enjoy what Plockton has to offer. Earlier this year it was was found to be the 'most popular' location across the country for the classic British dish, beating the Cornish town St Ives which came in second place in the fish and chips chart.

But if you need more than a very tasty take-away to lure you in, there's seal watching too. Calum Mackenzie, captain of the Sula Bheag, also runs daily wildlife cruises and they are the stuff of legend. But with a population of less than 500, quiet it what it does best.

The Scottish retreat has been growing more and more popular, with 97 per cent of online travel tool TripAdvisor's 300 reviews offering a conclusion of either excellent or very good. It's clearly a must see if the comment are anything to go by as families say don't think twice about making the journey.

One review read: "We loved strolling along, admiring the views and soaking up the atmosphere here. It's such a lovely little place with cute little shops and great local ice cream." Another person wrote: "Liked seal spotting trip from the harbour. Callum, the skipper, was fun. Lovely little cottages. Gorgeous on a nice sunny day."

Someone else was equally as thrilled and posted: "Plockton is very pretty. Rudha Mor Lilias's Garden are FREE to visit and situated down the far end of the village. These gardens take around 45 minutes to wander around depending at the pace you'd like enjoy them, and they really do have everything - a private beach, woodland, moss covered terrain a wild flower meadow, stunning views along the loch, a view of the lighthouse.

"The walk is a little up and down, following a simple path in a circle, all of which only adds to the charm and mystery. My parents and I couldn't believe that the gardens were free, we've paid far more for less loved gardens over the years! There is a donation box at the end of the walk which we were thankful for. What an amazing 'best kept secret' Plockton has..."
