We all know that getting enough sleep is important for our bodies - and the term "beauty sleep" is no a mistake. It's been proven that not getting enough sleep can have long-term effects on your skin. So making sure you get enough shut-eye really does do wonders to prevent ageing.

Instead of a quick fix to banish wrinkles by a surgeon, a better and more natural remedy is to get the hours in at night. So counting your hours instead of counting sheep can prevent signs of ageing much quicker. Dr. Shelby Harris, director of Sleepopolis, explains why it's so important for our bodies.

Adults are recommended to get between seven to nine hours a night, and it's important to reap the beauty benefits. It's time to restore your inner Sleeping Beauty, as Dr Shelby explained: "Sleep is a natural remedy for maintaining youthful skin. Sleep contributes to better skin health and anti-ageing by promoting skin repair, collagen production, healthy blood flow, hormone regulation, reduced inflammation, skin hydration, and stress reduction.

Although factors such as genetics, lifestyle, stress and health conditions can impact our sleeping pattern, she also suggested that adequate sleep helps to "support cellular rejuvenation" which helps to maintain skin elasticity, meaning it also prevents wrinkles and acne.

Dr Shelby also highlighted that you don't need a long and expensive skincare product list, as the most important product is sleep. As as she shared it's not just our skin that will benefit, it will help our immune system too: "Sleep helps our body repair and recover, supports cognitive function, regulates emotions, manages stress, maintains physical health, balances hormones, and aids in brain detoxification. Enhancing blood flow and oxygenation, maintaining hydration balance, reducing inflammation, and aiding in immune system support."

Also debunking the common myth that catching up on sleep at the weekend doesn't have the same benefits, and it's important to stick to a bedtime routine for the best results. Unfortunately meaning you can't wake up on a Sunday morning glowing. So to drift off for the deepest sleep, a cool dark and quiet environment is best, and sleeping on your back is the best position for your posture.
