Holidaymakers have been warned over a deadly seaside risk when taking their dogs to the coast amid several recent horror stories.

A terrier called Rebel almost died after plummeting over a cliff in Dorset yesterday. The little terrier had been off the lead when he plunged 100ft from the cliff in Lulworth. Frantic owners searched for their beloved pooch in the choppy waters below before eventually catching sight of him.

Incredibly the tough pup was trotting along the breach, heading in the direction of the Jurassic Coast's famous Durdle Door sea arch. After walking for nearly an hour the intrepid terrier was reunited with his stunned owners and was given a stern warning along with a well-deserved sausage.

A spokesperson from the Wyke Regis Coastguard said Rebel "did not have a mark on him" adding that the brave dog seemed to be "completely unperturbed by his ordeal". However the rescue experts warned that Rebel was lucky to have survived the massive fall.

“The team were tasked along with Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team to reports of a dog falling over the cliff,” they said. “The fortunate hound did not have a mark on it and seemed completely unperturbed - I think it just wanted a sausage. We gave out some stern safety advice regarding keeping dogs on leads around cliffs. We would urge the public to heed these warnings."

In another terrifying incident a French Bulldog called Bubbles nearly drowned in Lincolnshire this week after becoming stranded on a sandbank. Paddleboarders came to the rescue after Cleethorpes Coastguard said the stricken dog was too far out of reach for the team to help her out safely. Appearing to be approximately 100 metres away from the shore on an increasingly tiny sandbank, the team asked a pair of paddleboarders catching the morning waves if they would help on their rescue mission, GrimsbyLive reported.

The heroic duo obliged and quickly made their way towards the marooned dog. They successfully rescued Bubbles and took her back to land. While shaken up and cold, the dog was taken in by a Fitties resident until her owner was identified and Bubbles was eventually reunited safe and well.

A coastguard spokesperson said: "Bubbles was cold and very scared. "She was taken home by a local resident until the owner could be identified. Bubbles was eventually reunited with her owner safe and well. We love a great outcome. Massive thank you to the two locals who assisted with the rescue."

A third dog, Peppa, was missing for nearly two weeks before being reunited with her owners after being rescued from a cliff edge. Abersoch Coastguard Rescue Team said they received the "unlikely" call that a dog matching Peppa's description had been spotted on the cliffs after reports from a fisherman and two coast path walkers, reports Wales Online.

The coastguard's helicopter as well as teams from the RNLI Porthdinllaen, Aberdaron Coastguard Rescue Team and Criccieth Coastguard Rescue team rescued the stranded dog and she was eventually reunited with her tearful owners.
