A waitress was left shocked after an angry customer, who had eaten at the restaurant she worked in with his wife, scribbled an angry message on the bill - and refused to tip her because of a 'rude' act she had supposedly done. The waitress, who works in the US, had served the older man and his wife, who "looked younger", and had found the message written in black pen when while she was taking payment.

The angry diner claimed he refused to tip her because the waitress had asked if they wanted to split the $65.80 (£56.18) bill. On the front of the receipt, he had written: "No tip because it was very rude to ask my wife and I if we wanted separate checks???" Uploading a snap of the bill on Reddit, the waitress added: "He had the audacity to write this with my pen." She added that the man appeared to be in his "late 50s" or "early 60s" - while his wife looked "much younger".

The post received thousands of comments - but the reception was mixed. Many people who also work as waiters pointed out that that unless the customers asks for the bill to be split, they usually don't ask them. However, the anonymous woman replied: "At my job we are supposed to ask if it's separate checks, not assume they are together. We had a couple and some kids come in to eat once. The server brought out one check and the woman started freaking out because the server assumed that her and the man were still together.

"She was going on and on about how just because they look like a family doesn't mean that they're one check. That is why we ask because we want to prevent that situation from happening again."

However, the majority of commenters were on the forum poster's side. One person asked: "Isn't it standard practice to ask if everything is on one ticket or not? I am literally asked this any time I am with more than one other adult." Another added: "How the f*** are you supposed to know? I've seen folks that look married that were brother and sister both with wedding bands."

A fourth commented: "Haha, no we're married, one check is fine.' Is that really so hard? Talk about having an ego," while another added: "This is the kind of thing that's so ridiculous, it's laughable. I can't believe there are even people like that who exist."
