Donald Trump is facing his fourth indictment over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Today he is set to surrender to authorities in Fulton County. Here's how and why Donald Trump finds himself here today—and what will happen moving forward.

The former President announced Monday on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he intends to travel to Georgia Thursday to surrender to authorities, according to a report by Forbes.

He will be booked at the Rice Street jail facility in Fulton County, which has notoriously subjected inmates to rancid living conditions with lice, fleas and illness prompting the Justice Department to launch a civil rights investigation into the facility in July.

According to CNN, it remains unclear whether the presidential candidate will have to undergo typical processing procedures, which include fingerprinting, medical screening and, most importantly, a mugshot. Mr Trump has made it clear to his circle of lawyers that he wants to avoid having a mugshot taken, seemingly to protect his campaign.

The Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat has signalled that he intends to subject Trump and the other defendants to "normal practices." On Wednesday his co-conspitators, including Rudy Giuliani, surrendered to prison and their mugshots were released. It has been reported that the terms of Mr Trump's surrender, which include whether he will get a mugshot and whether it will be released, are still being negotiated up to the final hour.

Mr Trump will likely be released after he posts his $200,000 bail, which is a mandatory condition. The bail was arranged in conjunction with the 13 charges against him, $80,000 for racketeering and $10,000 for each of the remaining 12 counts. The former president is expected to follow the requirements of his release, which specifically forbids him from threatening or intimidating witnesses, co-defendants or unindicted co-conspirators in person or online. If these terms are broken, Judge Scott McaFee may revoke Mr Trump's bond.

The charges Trump is facing

The presidential candidate, and 18 others, is accused of orchestrating an effort to overturn the 2020 election results and faces 13 felony charges including, racketeering, solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer and conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree. The Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who has been subjected to online attacks from Trump, launched the investigation back in February 2021 which culminated in the indictment of Mr Trump and his co-conspirators last week.

According to Forbes, each felony charge carries a potential prison sentence ranging from one to 20 years if convicted. However, most of them could be punishable by a hefty fine.

What happens to Trump after he surrenders to jail?

Normally, individuals booked at Fulton County Jail appear before a magistrate judge within 72 hours. Given Mr Trump's "high profile," the former president and the 18 other defendants won't have initial court appearances because their bonds have all ready been negotiated, according to CNN. It’s possible for the defendants to make a virtual appearance for arraignment or have it waived completely, which makes Mr Trump's trial date all the more uncertain. Ms. Willis has suggested March 4, 2024, but legal experts have said that a 19-defendant trial of this magnitude couldn't possibly start that soon.
