'Plan to close train station ticket offices is an act of national vandalism'

Today the Mirror will hold an online rally as part of our campaign to halt the closure of station ticket offices.

It is imperative we stop this act of national vandalism that is being rammed through without consideration for passengers or staff. Rail bosses have given no thought to travellers who need additional assistance. They are blind to the fact that many prefer to buy tickets in person. They also have no understanding of how people value personal interactions when seeking advice and support.

The closures are yet another example of how this Tory Government has steadily unstitched the fabric which used to bind society together. This is not about improving services. It is profit-hunger railway companies seeking to gain at the expense of workers and customers. The Conservatives could halt the process today. Their craven failure to intervene won’t be forgotten at the general election.

Price of revolt

Wagner boss Yevegeny Prigozhin has been living on borrowed time ever since his attempted mutiny in June. Vladimir Putin, who rules Russia like a Mafia boss, has a ruthless reputation for taking revenge on anyone who challenges his authority. Which is why the finger of suspicion points towards the Kremlin being behind the downing of the plane on which Prigozhin was reportedly travelling.

No opponent of Putin is safe. The opposition politician Alexei Navalny was poisoned and now rots in jail on trumped up charges.
Dozens of journalists, defectors and critical oligarchs have been assassinated or found dead in mysterious circumstances.
Putin should be an international outcast. Those countries which refuse to condemn his actions are complicit in them.
