A cyclist has been hit by a speeding fire engine in south London, according to eyewitnesses.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Coldharbour Lane and Atlantic Road in Brixton, just before midday on Wednesday. The area was swiftly cordoned off by police and emergency personnel following the incident.

Paramedics were seen attending to the victim, believed to be a man in his 30s, who lay on the road with an oxygen mask covering his face. He was later transported into an ambulance for further treatment.

A silver bicycle, believed to belong to the victim, was spotted leaning against the fire engine involved in the accident. An air ambulance was also seen circling overhead.

A man in his 40s, who did not wish to be named, said he saw the cyclist crossing the junction from Atlantic Road when he was hit by the fire engine speeding down Coldharbour Lane. Speaking to the PA news agency, he said that fire engines often "come so fast up this road". He added: "It was a green light and I don't think he saw it coming."

Another bystander described hearing a loud "bang" before spotting the unconscious man on the road. Davood Germi, another witness, confirmed the cyclist "wasn't moving" prior to being taken away by paramedics.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade acknowledged the incident, stating they were "aware of an incident involving one of their appliances".

The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.
