Mason Greenwood 'targeted by English clubs' as Man Utd consider terminating deal

English clubs have reportedly contacted Manchester United over a potential move for Mason Greenwood.

United confirmed on Monday that Greenwood, 21, will be leaving the club in order to continue his career "away from Old Trafford." The forward, capped once by England, had been the subject of an internal investigation at United after having charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February.

Now that the Red Devils have decided Greenwood will be on his way out, speculation is rife over his next move. ESPN report that United have already been approached by clubs in England and abroad who are looking to sign their academy graduate.

Greenwood remains under contract until 2025, with a club option of a further 12 months. Due to the summer transfer window closing on September 1, the Red Devils have just 10 days to agree a move. But sources say that an agreement could be reached whereby Greenwood's deal is terminated, allowing him to leave for free.

United won't seek to monetise the 21-year-old's exit but should a fee be generated, the club will hold discussions over how best to use the funds. Greenwood's mostly likely destination is a club in Saudi Arabia or Turkey, while emphasis will be put on where best to rebuild his career after recently becoming a father.

Having last played a competitive match in January 2022, the Red Devils will help Greenwood reestablish his once blossoming career. In an open letter to supporters, CEO Richard Arnold explained: "While I am satisfied that Mason did not commit the acts he was charged with, Mason's accepted that he has made mistakes which he takes responsibility for.

"I am also mindful of the challenge that Mason would face rebuilding his career and raising a baby together with his partner in the harsh spotlight of Manchester United. Further, this case has provoked strong opinions, and it is my responsibility to minimise any distraction to the unity we are seeking within the club.

"Although we have decided that Mason will seek to rebuild his career away from Manchester United, that does not signal the end of this matter. The club will continue to offer its support both to the alleged victim and Mason to help them rebuild and move forward positively with their lives."
