A man recently discovered that his casual "hobby" of playing the lottery had transformed into a life-changing windfall of $3million (£2.35million) - but he remained blissfully unaware of his newfound fortune for weeks.

J. Refugio Gonzalez Almeida, from Salt Lake City, a dedicated lottery enthusiast, had ventured to the neighbouring state of Idaho to partake in the lottery due to Utah's restrictive laws. He is no stranger to buying multiple tickets. “Playing the lottery is my hobby,” he said.

Almeida, who considers lottery-playing his personal pastime, had made the trek to Malad, Idaho, on July 4, coincidentally his own birthday, with aspirations of claiming the staggering $400million Mega Millions jackpot.

He reinvested his prior lottery winnings into the enormous jackpot and struck gold when his numbers aligned on Independence Day. Although he didn't hit the coveted Megaball, the Megaplier feature, set at 3, transformed his potential million-dollar victory into an astounding $3million prize.

Almeida remained entirely oblivious to his financial windfall for an entire month. It wasn't until he returned to Malad, where he had purchased the ticket, that he decided to check his numbers.

He recalls: "I had $2, $8, not a lot. And then they scanned this one and told me I had to take it to the Lottery Commission. So here I am!" Asked about his plans for the winnings, he chuckled and said, "I am taking this right to the bank and depositing it!"

It comes as, last week, a United States Navy sailor won the largest online lottery ever recorded - securing a jaw-dropping $1.8 million (£1.4m) windfall.

Byron Bundoc, from Virginia, achieved this remarkable feat through the online instant game Jackpot Spectacular, after he brought the ticket on a whim on August 10. As the virtual reels spun, Bryan's screen lit up with an astounding notification – he had won an instant prize amounting to an eye-popping $1,817,588 (£1.4m).

Bryon, who called the win "surreal", wasted no time in sharing the good news with his closest family members. "I called my brother and said, 'You're not going to believe this'," he recalled.

Jackpot Spectacular is exclusively available in Virginia and Pennsylvania. The online version of Jackpot Spectacular had only been introduced in Virginia the previous month. The sailor had been closely following the escalating jackpot amounts on the game before making the decision to participate. He said he is still uncertain about how he plans to utilise his newfound wealth.

Lottery officials have disclosed that the odds of securing a prize in the game stand at 1 in 3.99, though these odds can vary based on the price point of the ticket. Among a sea of hopeful players, Bron stands alone as the individual who defied the odds and reaped the monumental reward of $1,817,588.
