Josie Gibson was gobsmacked after a dentist told her she has been brushing her teeth incorrectly for many years. The This Morning presenter and her co-star Rochelle Humes spoke to Dr Deepak about dental hygiene during the health segment as he revealed the things that people do wrong when it comes to taking care of their teeth.
"What's the main thing that people are doing that they are actually doing wrong?" Josie asked the dentist. He answered: "A really basic thing is, if you brush your teeth, try not to rinse with water. Let that good stuff in the toothpaste ingredients sit on the teeth for at least 20 to 30 minutes - that's really important."
Josie looked shocked and asked him: "So hold on, you don't swill your mouth out after?" as he confirmed to her: "No, so the magic thing is spit don't rinse. So yes, spit out that excess amount." Even Rochelle was surprised by the news and admitted she rinses away her toothpaste.
"You're washing away all that good stuff," Dr Deepak said. Rochelle pressed for more information, asking the dentist: "So once you're brushed, you're saying leave it at that?" He confirmed and added: "You'll see so much benefit from that." After watching the segment, fans rushed to the comment section to share their advice.

The dentist said it's best not to rinse after brushing (@thismorning/Instagram)One user said: "There is only a tiny amount of toothpaste/fluoride left in your mouth once you have spat it out. My dentist recommended this to me years ago and this has done my teeth and gums the world of good. Of course he is right he is a trained dentist."

"My dentist told me this years ago, and my teeth have seen the benefit. Also, do not use mouthwash unless prescribed as they're the same as rinsing. i.e., a waste of money," another pointed out while one added: "I was taught this years ago when I had dental training to support people in care homes and nursing… still does my head in when people rinse it all out , but it’s their life."
The NHS website also recommends not rinsing after brushing your teeth. They wrote: "After brushing, spit out any excess toothpaste. Don't rinse your mouth immediately after brushing, as it'll wash away the concentrated fluoride in the remaining toothpaste. Rinsing dilutes it and reduces its preventative effects."
