The first day of school is a big day for any child, as it's where they will be spending most of their weekdays for a long time. It's also an emotional day for parents, but for kids they might feel a mixture of nerves and excitement as they meet their teachers and make new friends - and it can also be quite exhausting.

Although it's still school summer holiday in England, over in Scotland kids returned last week, which brought back fond memories for mum Stacey McCullagh. The mum won't be forgetting her daughter Lyla's first day in a hurry, after taking hilarious before and after pictures of the youngster back in August last year.

Reminiscing about her daughter Lyla's first day as a student at St Mark's Primary in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, she shared that she was "emotional but happy" to see the four-year-old set off to go to school. She made sure the youngster looked as smart as possible, and snapped a picture in her new uniform, before she headed to school looking bright-eyed and bushy tailed.

Pictures, which Stacey shared with the Daily Record, showed Lyla smiling and looking immaculate in the morning, ready to take on the day. But the picture taken at the end of the day told a different story. It appeared the first day of school was too much for Lyla, as mum Stacey, 40, found her conked out on the doorstep, resting on the lap of her older sister when she got home.

Lyla could be seen looking absolutely exhausted and asleep with her mouth wide open, while her sister Lucy Ann, 17, is fighting to hold back laughter. Her sister is also holding the youngster's backpack and blazer, while her tie is also missing.

Stacey and her daughter Lucy Ann had collected Lyla from school, and she had complained about being "so tired" the whole way home. But when they arrived, the mum realised she didn't have her keys, so her daughters had to wait on the step for a few minutes while she went to get them.

When she returned back with the keys, Stacey was gobsmacked when she saw Lyla had completely passed out. Trying to contain her laughter, the mum gently woke up the child and took her in the house, where she took an hour and a half nap on the sofa.

Explaining why she was so tired, Lyla said she had "played with sand". Despite this, Lyla woke up for school the next day with no issues, but unfortunately had a nasty fall in the playground and cut her knee. When she arrived home, she told her mum that her knee was sore, and tried to get a day off out of the ordeal.

Stacey added: "I told her she couldn't, but we did put plasters and various band aids on her knee to make her feel better. The whole thing has given us a good laugh."
