Rylan Clark has led celebrities in sharing consoling messages of support to the England women's football team after they lost the FIFA World Cup Final against Spain today.

The Lionesses' hopes for World Cup glory were shattered by Spain in a gripping face-off which saw Spain win the game with one goal. As the players were seen in tears over the result after the final whistle was blown, Rylan took to Twitter to insist fans are still incredibly proud of the team.

He penned: "The @Lionesses keeping it going right to the last seconds. We’re all proud of ya!!!! X" while Gary Lineker said: "Gutted for the @lionesses who gave their all, but congratulations to Spain on winning the World Cup. They were the better team and thoroughly deserved their victory."

Prince William, who was slammed by celebrities for not attending the match in person, tweeted on his official The Prince and Princess of Wales account: "Although it’s the result none of us wanted, @Lionesses you have done yourselves and this nation proud. Your spirit & drive have inspired so many people and paved the way for generations to come. Thank you for the footballing memories. Congratulations to Spain. W".

Carol Vorderman penned a comforting note as she wrote: "Congratulations Spain.... And thank you Lionesses for all you've done for women in tbe UK. [sic] I know it won't feel like it right now, but from an old bird whose early dreams were stopped by the "system", you have given us such hope for the future (long after I've gone). Thank you". And Piers Morgan chimed in with: "BREAKING: Our women can’t bring it home either. Good effort @Lionesses but the better team won. Congrats to Spain."

A number os stars shared snaps or were photographed watching the game today including Maya Jama, Idris Elba and Katherine Ryan.

Love Island host Maya Jama looked radiant as she beamed while watching a screening of the game in London. Sat alongside a pal, the 29-year-old looked stunning a white vest top, jeans and black sunglasses while giving a smile to the camera. During the game, the star shared a video of herself holding a box of McDonald's chips to snack on while she watched the action unfold.

The TV star looked comfortable perched on a bright red bean bag as crowds of Lioness fans were gathered behind her to watch the game on a big screen.

Meanwhile, comedian Katherine Ryan opted to watch the match in a more peaceful setting as she filmed a clip of her view from what appeared to be a hotel room in the countryside before panning the camera to show her husband Bobby Koostra watching the action from a wall hung TV.

Idris Elba was snapped watching the events of the gripping final unfold intently from the crowd. He dressed in a a low-key fashion as the Luther actor sported a black cap, black sunglasses and a shirt of the same colour. He was seen watching the screen while holding his phone in his hand.
