Sean O'Malley fires back at fellow UFC star Ian Garry after '5am' jibe

Sean O'Malley has labelled Ian Machado Garry as "immature" for belittling his UFC title fight against Aljamain Sterling.

O'Malley looks to dethrone bantamweight champion Sterling when they headline UFC 292 at the TD Garden in Boston on Saturday night. It's the first title fight of O'Malley's career as he looks to upset the odds by handing Sterling his first loss in over five years. Irish prospect Garry is also in action on the main card as he takes on perennial welterweight contender Neil Magny.

Garry raised eyebrows earlier in the week by stating at the media day: "Who in good f*** is waking up at 5am in Europe or the rest of the world for that matter to watch Aljamain Sterling and Sean O'Malley. They're waiting up for me, I can promise you that, they're waking up and tuning in for me because I'm a superstar in Europe.

"I've got an Irish nation behind me and a Brazilian nation behind me now and I'm excited to go out there and show that I am a superstar." O'Malley was less than impressed with Garry's comment and although he refused to badmouth the unbeaten welterweight, 'Suga' labelled his comments as "silly".

"I get what he's doing. I posted a clip of his manager saying that Geoff Neal pulled put because his p**** hurts. He's a little mad at me for that but I think he could have went about it in other ways because that comment is just absolutely silly," O'Malley told Mirror Fighting. "I think he's going to be a star and do really good work, but for him to say that this card is not about me it just shows his immaturity and his age a little bit, but I like the kid and I'm not going to say anything bad about him.

Sterling has already outlined his goal of fighting featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski after this weekend but O'Malley plans to put a halt to those plans. The charismatic 28-year-old earned himself a title shot by beating former champion Petr Yan last October and he is already visualising waking up with the UFC belt in his bed on Sunday morning.

"It's going to happen however it plays out but I've obviously visualised it and manifested for it to be as favourable as it possibly can. Realistically we're going through a war, I'm going to leave it all on the line. On Sunday morning, I'm going to wake up sore as hell with the belt in my bed," he added.
