Hojlund shares injury update as new Man Utd signing awaits Premier League debut

Rasmus Hojlund has issued a positive fitness update as he hopes to make himself available for his Manchester United debut.

Hojlund was United's third signing of the summer transfer window after joining from Atalanta. Attack-minded midfielder Mason Mount completed his move to Old Trafford earlier this summer before the club also moved to sign goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract with an option of a further 12 months with United paying the Serie A club £72million for his services. Ten Hag had been searching for a new centre forward all summer, with Anthony Martial the only recognised senior striker at the club.

However, Hojlund had to sit out the season opener against Wolves for United this week as he is nursing an injury he picked up during his final few weeks with Atalanta. It is a notable setback for the Red Devils, who had been hoping to play their keynote signing from the start to familiarise the Dane with his new teammates.

Reports had circulated that the Denmark international had longer-term fitness issues including a suggestion that an MRI scan had shown a stress fracture in Hojlund’s back. However, those concerns have been downplayed by United boss Erik ten Hag.

Speaking before the Wolves game, the United boss said: "He had a small issue and he's not on the levels where our players are at in this moment. So we have to train him. Prognosis [is] difficult always to say. We are confident and we are positive."

The striker has now shared an image on his social media streams which shows himself involved in training with United, alongside a message simply stating ‘Soon’ alongside a red devil emoji. United face an early season testing trip to Tottenham on Saturday.

Ten Hag will be keen for the striker to be available for selection as soon as possible, as Marcus Rashford had to play centrally in his absence – rather than from his preferred position on the left – while Anthony Martial did not feature against Wolves due to ongoing fitness issues.

Hojlund impressed in his debut season in Bergamo having joined from Sturm Graz last summer. He bagged nine goals and provided four assists in Serie A while also impressing his nation in the European Championships qualifiers.
