When you hear that Starbucks has released a new drink, you might automatically think that this is something our friends across the pond have already had on the menu for ages - so I was very excited when I learned that the American coffee giant had released a UK-exclusive drink.

Starbucks released the new coffee in celebration of its 25th birthday - and it's a twist on a quintessentially British tradition. The Clotted Cream Fudge Cold Brew is based on the classic tradition of afternoon tea, combining the flavours of clotted cream and fudge.

When I first heard of the drink, which was released on August 10, my eyes widened. I'm a big afternoon tea fan, and was intrigued to find out how Starbucks could get these flavours across in a humble cold brew. I was invited to try the drink at a local branch in London, where I was told the reaction on social media had been great.

I was incredibly excited to try it myself, especially after a Starbucks barista poured out the sweet cold foam on top in front of me - before I watched it all mix into a delicious-looking, creamy drink. For those wondering, the drink features Starbucks' "signature, super-smooth cold brew" which is "combined with vanilla flavour syrup, topped with a sweet cream foam infused with Clotted Cream Fudge flavouring, then finished with a Clotted Cream Fudge topping".

There's no doubt it looks impressive, but how does it taste? As sickly sweet as that may sound to some people, to me it was the perfect mixture of bitter-sweet, and brought me straight back to childhood, as it's my mum's favourite sweet. The flavour of the clotted cream and fudge isn't overpowering, and it's actually really well-balanced.

Texture-wise, I just love the combination of the mellow cold brew, which is coffee that has been steeped in cool water over a long period of time, with the fluffy, deliciously-infused cold foam. Unsurprisingly, I'm very happy that it's a permanent fixture on the Starbucks menu. This is the perfect summertime drink, but I can't imagine reaching for it in the colder months.

Mirror Money Editor Levi Winchester was also lucky enough to get a taste of the cold brew, and shared: "I like how the sweet creamy top of the Clotted Cream Fudge Cold Brew really mellows out the strong cold brew. The only criticism I would say is that I can't really taste fudge. I've only really started drinking coffee in the last couple of years and I'm not a fan of anything overly bitter, so this drink works for me."

While I sat at the Starbucks I was fascinated by the bucket of cold brew I saw sitting in the corner, which I was told is made fresh in-house. The coffee grounds are slowly steeped in cool water for 20 hours to create a "mellow coffee with a rich flavour".

A Starbucks spokesman continued: "Prepared in small batches, the Cold Brew is combined with vanilla flavour syrup and poured over ice, topped with a sweet cream foam infused with Clotted Cream Fudge flavouring and then finished with a Clotted Cream Fudge topping."

The cold brew itself is made with Starbucks Cold Brew Blend, which is a specially designed mix of Latin American and African coffee grounds that "guarantee chocolatey flavours with notes of citrus". Since its release, Starbucks has launched a number of unique Cold Brew variations, including the festive favourite Toffee Nut Cream Cold Brew.
