US military woman's dad and husband die a month apart in separate tragedies
A woman on active military duty flew home from her station in Korea to bury her father just last month - and now she must bury her husband, too.
Tragedy struck twice in a month for the North Carolina woman, who now grieves the death of two of the most important people in her life.
On Monday morning, a truck travelling eastbound on I-10 in Harrison County, Mississippi, slowed down, causing an 18-wheeler to rear-end it. That sparked a gruesome chain reaction of crashes, including the one that led to the woman's husband dying.
Jaelan Baker had been driving a white pickup truck behind the 18-wheeler when he crashed into the back of it, sliding underneath the immense cab, reported WLOX. The crash decimated both his vehicle and him.

A semi and two trucks were involved in the initial accident, resulting in one fatality (WLOX TV)Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer revealed the 24-year-old's cause of death to be blunt force trauma on Tuesday. He was also a military veteran and had been married to his unnamed wife for less than a year — she is now widowed and still in Korea.
The Fayetteville, North Carolina, resident had been in Louisiana over the weekend to finalise affairs related to his late father-in-law, and bring some of his wife's stuff back to North Carolina. The truck he had been driving when he crashed was one of the items that belonged to her father that she was to take possession of.
The crash that killed Baker wasn't the only one to occur that morning on I-10, either.
A fire rescue vehicle took a tumble during the second crash, though no one as injured in that one (WLOX TV)As a rescue squad vehicle approached the scene of the accident, which occurred around mile marker 23 just west of the Menge Avenue exit, it was struck by a truck. The driver had allegedly been watching the scene of the accident and wasn't paying attention to the road.
The truck was thrown into the median, rolling into westbound lanes of the highway. None of the fire crew were injured, reported Bill Snyder of WLOX.
Both sides of the interstate suffered severe traffic delays and closures as a result of the incidents.
On top of that, the eastbound lanes were already partially closed due to construction at exit 24, the one that leads to Menge Avenue. It took several hours for crews to clear the wreckage and return the flow of traffic to relatively normal levels.
