Brits' hopes of a balmy Bank Holiday where they can soak up the sun at the end of August have been dashed by the Met Office.

After Monday’s washout, temperatures are going to rise this week and could hit 30C by Friday with a high pressure over the country. But it is downhill from there with the month set to end in a damp squib.

Rather than a heatwave, the Met Office has said there are some signs that hurricanes could develop in the Atlantic over the coming weeks.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said that temperatures could be slightly higher than average but that is to be expected with climate change. Weather charts for the period appear to be fairly bland with no strong signals of high or low pressures over the UK and similarly for temperatures.

He said: “There are no strong drivers in our climate at this time of year and you often get this wishy washy pattern through the second half of summer. Another contributing factor to that is the potential for Atlantic storms.

“Now, it has been quite quiet in recent weeks in the Atlantic in terms of hurricanes but there is a bit of a signal over the next few weeks that we could see a few more of those developing, the sea surface temperatures are above average, countering that is El Nino.

“But there are some signals that we could see more. And of course climatologically towards the end of August, first part of September, is the most active time for hurricanes and storms in the Atlantic basin and that adds uncertainty at this time of year into the computer models as well. So no real strong signals one way or the other.”

The Met Office long forecast from August 19 to 28 also suggests little possibility of warm weather for the bank holiday. “An unsettled start to the period is most likely, with heavy rain and thunderstorms clearing northeastwards, though lingering in the extreme northeast,” it reads.

“Rather cloudy and at times humid conditions are likely to follow, some showers mainly in the west, whilst the best of limited sunshine are likely to be in the east. Beyond this, fairly changeable conditions are most likely; a small change of a more settled weather developing early next week which could turn hot in the south, but otherwise a mixture of sunny spells and cloudy weather with showers is the most likely.

“Winds mostly light to moderate, although a change of stronger winds in the far north at times, Temperatures are most likely to be a little above average overall, especially at the start of the period.”
