Bulgaria is the place to go for if you're sick of the temperamental British weather and are looking for a last minute cheap holiday.

Hot on the heels of the UK’s sixth wettest July on record, new analysis from online travel agent loveholidays has highlighted the cheapest package holidays available on its website departing between now and the end of September.

Bulgaria is the destination offering the lowest prices, with a seven night getaway to the country averaging £564 per person or just £80 per person per night.

Renowned for its landscapes, rich cultural traditions and turquoise coastline, Bulgaria basks in sunshine during summer, with a spontaneous trip to Sunny Beach this month expected to provide Brits with a welcome average temperature of 28C.

If you do make it to the famed resort then, as you the same suggests, you can expect to find some great golden sand beaches, swim-friendly waters and bustling promenades with heaps of restaurants, shops and bars.

Action Waterpark is a popular Sunny Beach attraction with plenty of slides, pools, lazy rivers and games for the whole family. There's also a free shuttle bus to take you direct to the water park from the hotels.

If you're looking for a fun night out on the town, Sunny Beach won't disappoint with its wide array of bars and clubs. While it may have less of a reputation for high-end house beats than Ibiza, what it lacks in pedigree it makes up for with cheap price and debauchery.

Once you have bopped until you've dropped (and hopefully awoken fresh the following day), then a trip to the Ancient City of Nessebar is probably in order. The UNESCO World Heritage site is known as the Pearl of the Black Sea and dates back more than 3,000 years. Think cobbled streets, picturesque ruins and historic landmarks including the remains of a 5th-century church.

Thrill-seekers may want to check out Lunas Park, an amusement park where you'll find plenty of rollercoasters, arcade games and gentler rides for little ones, including a mini pirate ship. It's right by the seafront too so you won't have to go far whether you want to while away a few hours or make a day of it.

Ranking second and third on the list of cheap package holidays are Latvia and Albania, averaging £600 and £620 per person respectively for a seven night flight and hotel package. Both countries provide the perfect mix of sun and sightseeing, with Albania averaging a balmy 28C throughout September.

Famed for its year-round warm climate, Tunisia ranks fourth on loveholidays’ list of budget friendly destinations for a week-long last minute break, priced at £712 per person on average. Finland rounds out the top five at £732 per person for a seven night package, while Sweden ranks sixth (£749 per person) and Poland ranks seventh (£791 per person).

All three popular city break destinations offer comfortable weather conditions throughout August, with daily temperatures averaging 20C in Helsinki, 22C in Stockholm and 19C in Warsaw.

Sun seekers may prefer to visit Romania, ranking eighth on the list at £812 per person, with the country’s capital city Bucharest boasting average temperatures of 30C during August.

Completing the top 10 are Hungary (£882 per person) and Morocco (£917 per person); both safe bets for Brits looking for a sun-filled holiday without breaking the bank.
