A mum found brutally murdered on a hiking trail was "devoted" to her five children - as mystery surrounds her tragic death.

Rachel Morin, 37, from Maryland, was described as "very warm" by her former bosses after she was found murdered on August 6 on the Ma and Pa hiking trail in Bel Air.

Boyfriend Richard Tobin, 27, raised the alarm when she failed to return after telling police that her car was parked near the trail entrance.

He has denied any involvement in her disappearance or death after he took to Facebook to defend himself. He has not been accused of any wrongdoing, nor has law enforcement named him as a suspect.

Mr Tobin, whose lengthy rap sheet includes second-degree assault, violating restraining orders, and resisting arrest, wrote: “I love Rachel, I would never do anything to her, let the family and I grieve. Yes I have a past but I also have 15 months clean and have changed as a person."

Margaret Woltz, 69, who employed Rachel and her husband Richard for eight years helping keep their home tidy, told the New York Post, she was "devoted" to her kids, who were aged between 8 and 18 and had three different fathers.

She revealed: “(Rachel) was very warm and above all she loved her children. She raised them very well. She had a flexible work schedule that allowed her to make sure her kids were always taken care of. We were like grandparents to the kids and we trusted her implicitly.”

Information surrounding the mum's death has been scant but authorities have described the investigation as a "criminal homicide."

"We are being very careful — very selective — in what we share, only sharing things that we feel will help advance the investigation forward," Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler told Fox News on Friday. "And we certainly recognize that many people in our community and outside of it ... are looking for answers, but … I have been very careful to say they cannot come at the expense of conducting a quality investigation."

Rebekah Morin, Rachel's sister, took to Facebook to say that just a week before Rachel's disappearance, their brother and sister-in-law suffered the loss of their infant daughter to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

She said: "So our whole family has been hit with back-to-back losses. My sister had no life insurance and my mother and I will be making the arrangements and need to raise funds to do so." Rebekah shared a link for a GoFundMe to help cover any funeral expenses.

The fundraiser's description reads: "This was not an accidentally death, and she did not go willingly and she deserves a funeral worthy of her beauty."

The Ma and Pa Trail is set to reopen for visitors, albeit with a heightened police presence. The investigation into Rachel Morin's death is ongoing, according to cops.
