Meghan Markle has been praised for taking charge of her mental health and making decisions that can help her improve her wellbeing. The Duchess of Sussex has been spotted wearing a stress patch, which mental health experts have claimed is a "proactive" way for the former actress to take hold of her mental health.

Meghan turned to a stress-busting treatment to help her keep calm as she was seen wearing what looked like a wellness disc that is loved by Hollywood stars. The drug-free treatment – which costs £1,000 a year – boosts gaba neurotransmitters, reduces stress hormones and improves sleep, according to its US makers NuCalm.

A source said: “They are becoming very popular in the US. Wearers say they can help people battle a range of ailments, including stress, insomnia and pain.”

Meghan was seen wearing the patch while she was out walking with a bodyguard near her home in Montecito, California, on Thursday. The mum-of-two, 42, has faced a number of setbacks this summer.

GP Expert Witness Dr. Hana Patel exclusively told us that the stress patches are good for people wanting to "take a proactive approach to their mental health".

"NuClam claims to help relax the brain and the body naturally and within minutes and shares how it works with the brain circuity in the limbic system that is responsible for activating the stress response," she said. "NuCalm utilizes neuroacoustic software and cranial electrotherapy stimulation to reduce stress levels and help the body relax."

While there isn't much research on the device, it is known within the field of dentistry, as Dr Patel explains: "There have been trials carried out to look at the way they treat nervous patients in their practice." She added that, as with many things, having confidence that the treatment will work means that it "may be more likely to work for the patient," which hints that Meghan's treatment could simply be a placebo.

Dr Patel also doesn't think that it comes as a shock that Meghan has reached for the device, as someone who is "in the public eye" and possibly dealing with mental and physical health concerns. "It must be so difficult for people in the public eye dealing with mental and physical health concerns, and if we know or suspect that friends or family may be struggling, we should reach out to them for support. I think the culture in USA is different from UK regarding health, in that there is a lot more awareness on people's proactive nature towards their health in general."
