Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young struggled on his debut for the NFL franchise - after receiving little help from his offensive line.

The Panthers were taking on the New York Jets in their first pre-season game ahead of the 2023 NFL regular season. The Jets ran out 27-0 winners with the Panthers failing to score a single point.

Young made his first start in the game and completed his first pass. But he endured a difficult time in his first outing in a Panthers jersey as he came under constant pressure.

The 22-year-old was the No.1 pick for the Panthers in the 2023 NFL Draft, following a trade with the Chicago Bears for the first overall selection. It remains to be seen whether the NFC South franchise will have Young as their starting quarterback going into the new season.

Young managed just four pass completions at 4-6 during his brief time on the field. In total, he threw for just 21 yards with no touchdown passes and no interceptions.

The Panthers rookie struggled with the Jets defensive line throughout his time on the field. He was sacked once and evaded a tackle a further eight times as the Panthers offensive line could do very little to stop the quarterback from being under pressure to either perform a pass or throw the ball away.

It’s a problem that Aaron Rodgers is said to have been dealing with during training camp with the Jets. The veteran quarterback is preparing for his first season at the MetLife Stadium after his trade from the Green Bay Packers back in April.

During a recent practice, Rodgers is said to have been struggling to evade the defensive line thanks to a lack of protection from his offensive line. In one particular practice pass protection was an “issue all day” for the Jets.

Rodgers did not play against the Panthers in the pre-season game on Saturday night. The four-time NFL MVP watched on the sidelines and helped give instructions to the players alongside head coach Robert Saleh.

Despite the Jets' offensive line apparently struggling during practice, it seemed to cope just fine against the Panthers. The Jets gave up just 165 total yards and sacked the quarterback five times in total, with Matt Corral being on the receiving end of four of those.

Next up for Young and the Panthers in pre-season is a friendly game against the New York Giants followed by another against the Detroit Lions. That will all be the build-up to the Week One opener against NFC South divisional rivals the Atlanta Falcons.
