In the twelve years since she married into the Royal Family, the Princess of Wales has become a leading voice in the field of early years development and looking after children's mental health.

Kate launched The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood in June last year and set up the successful 'Big 5' survey which helped us to learn about the first five years of a child's life. More recently, the Princess unveiled the Shaping Us campaign which raises awareness for the importance our early childhood has in shaping the adults we grow into.

As a result of her work and genuine passion for children's wellbeing, she has earned a rather special nickname which draws comparisons with one given to Diana, Princess of Wales. Much in the same way that Diana, Princess of Wales was first nicknamed 'The People's Princess' in 1992, Kate has been dubbed 'The Children's Princess' by royal fans on social media.

The term has been in circulation ever since Kate's clear interests in early years development started and it has only gone from strength to strength. One user wrote: "The Princess of Wales is proving yet again why she is The Children's Princess. She loves working with and working for children. Catherine is wonderful and I'm excited to see the things she will do in the future."

Another fan wrote ahead of Children's Mental Health Week: "I can't wait to see what the Princess of Wales, known as a Children's Princess, has in store for us on #childrenmentalhealthweek next week."

When the Princess of Wales launched Shaping Us, she described the initiative as her "life's work" and said "it is more important than ever" to support the development of young children. The princess said: “The way we develop, through our experiences, relationships and surroundings during our early childhood, fundamentally shapes our whole lives. It affects everything from our ability to form relationships and thrive at work, to our mental and physical wellbeing as adults and the way we parent our own children.

“These are the most preventive years. By focusing our collective time, energy and resources to build a supportive, nurturing world around the youngest members of our society and those caring for them, we can make a huge difference to the health and happiness of generations to come.

“All of society has a role to play in this, even if you are not directly involved in a child’s life, because we are all responsible for building a more compassionate world in which our children can grow, learn and live. In these difficult times, it is more important than ever to help support parents and caregivers provide loving safe and secure homes for their babies and young children to survive.”
