'My narcissistic mother-in-law ruined my gender reveal - I can't stop crying'

Finding out the sex of your baby is an exciting time in any parent's life, whether you decide to find out at your doctor's appointment or choose to wait until the little one is born. Or, you may even decide to throw a gender reveal party in which someone close to you takes the results from the doctor and plans a surprise party for you and your loved ones to discover whether you'll be having a boy or a girl.

But one mum-to-be was left in tears when her "toxic" mother-in-law completely ruined the gender reveal party she was supposed to be having - after she told her she was "happy to be having a grandson" and spoilt the surprise. The woman said her husband's mum was under the impression that she already knew she was having a boy, despite not having been to the party yet to find out the results.

In a post on Reddit, she said: "This is just one issue of many with her. She's very toxic, narcissistic, and manipulative. The world revolves around her, and by extension, her son (but still second place to her). I had an email from my doctor with my gender results in an attachment. I shared it with my friend who would be baking a cake for our small party this Sunday, and I sent it to my parents because they live out of state so won't be attending, and they can keep a secret.

"My husband told her I had the results but we didn't know what it was yet. So she messages me today and asks to see the results. I agreed as she's also out of state and won’t be able to come. I told her I hadn't opened them yet. Less than 10 minutes go by and she sends a message saying 'So happy to be having a grandson!'. At first, I thought she was joking, so I just replied that I didn't know the gender and then she started apologising, saying she thought everyone but my husband knew.

"Did she honestly believe that we were just having a gender reveal party for him?! I'm not upset about the gender at all but the last way I wanted to find out was through my toxic MIL. Ugh, I am seeing red. I cried all morning after it happened. In the grand scheme of things I know it isn't a big deal but man, I am p***ed off."

Commenters on the post were quick to let the mum-to-be know that she had every right to be upset about the situation, and sympathised with her as they shared similar stories about their own mother-in-laws who did similar things to them.

One person said: "She ruined something for you, AGAIN. And it was something important to you. And you can't undo it. Just feel all sad. Just really, really, really let yourself feel the bad that comes with her ruining of all things, this. Hugs, momma," while another person sympathised: "My MIL has ruined multiple surprises for me including my engagement and a big surprise birthday gift from my husband. I knew she would find a way to let it slip like this, so she found out via video call."
