Michael Owen has urged Harry Kane not to join Bayern Munich this summer after the German giants reached an agreement with Tottenham.

Spurs are said to have accepted a bid worth more than £86.4m and it is now down to Kane to decide whether he wants to stay or go. And Owen believes Kane should remain at Tottenham and break Alan Shearer's record for the most Premier League goals in history.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United forward claimed that would be a "bigger achievement than winning the league in a country dominated by 1 team". Owen wrote on social media: "I know Bayern Munich are a massive club and I have huge respect for them but if I were Harry Kane I’d stay put.

"There’s no great achievement in winning a trophy with them. Real Madrid I would understand. Or one or two top Premier League clubs for that matter. Becoming the all time Premier League top goal scorer at Tottenham is a bigger achievement than winning the league in a country dominated by 1 team."

Owen's former Liverpool teammate Jamie Carragher also made a similar point, stating that breaking Shearer's record "will be huge" for Kane and suggested the only reason he would join Bayern is to have a shot at winning the Champions League rather than the Bundesliga.

"Alan Shearer’s PL goal record gets talked about a lot more than his PL winners medal," Carragher said. "That record will be huge for HK. The big plus for going to Bayern is to guarantee he plays CL football & a chance to win that trophy every season.

"It’s not about their domestic trophies, they’ll win them anyway & I’m sure he’d rather have the PL record than the Bundesliga!" However, ex-England winger Stewart Downing feels Kane should simply "go and win some trophies" at Bayern.

"Kane must look at Erling Haaland at Manchester City with a bit of envy, mustn’t he? He gets 25 to 30 goals for Tottenham, so he’s always going to get goals," Downing told Betway. "I think he deserves to play in a team that’s winning trophies. Bayern Munich are always in the latter stages of the Champions League, they’re always strong.

"It sounds to me like he wants to have the chance to win a competition like the Champions League, which you can’t begrudge him. He’s given a lot of service to Tottenham. But I think if he stays, he’ll never leave. If he signs a new contract, I think that’ll be him done.

"He’ll end up breaking the Premier League goals record and getting a statue outside the ground. I think for a player of his quality, though, don’t worry about the record. Go and win some trophies if that’s what it’s about."
