Gary Neville has admitted he would be "stunned" if Harry Kane signed for Bayern Munich and pleaded for Manchester United to try and hijack the move for the Tottenham forward.

Bayern want to sign the England international this summer and have now had a £86.4m bid accepted by Tottenham for the England captain, who will make a decision on his future.

Kane has since set his own deadline of the end of this week to settle the transfer. The 30-year-old will be a Tottenham player this season if Bayern do not get a deal done by the start of the Premier League season - despite Kane having just one year left on his contract in north London.

Neville, who was speaking in the latest episode of The Overlap, said he would be surprised if Kane joined Bayern and didn't stay to try and break Alan Shearer's Premier League goal record. And he instead suggested that United could be waiting in the wings to seal a deal, although Levy is deeply opposed to selling to an English rival.

"I am hoping they are watching what is happening and being clever and waiting, seeing an £86m deal might get agreed with Bayern and Kane goes 'I'm not going, I want to go to United'," Neville said. "United need Harry Kane and he puts them into that realm of catching City and Arsenal. They need someone right here, right now.

"I will be stunned if he goes to Bayern and doesn't want to break that Premier League record. Tottenham have rejected that bid because they know he isn't going to go to Bayern. Harry Kane wants them to believe he will accept that money and will then go, 'no I want to go to United'. Levy would be dead. He knows he won't go to Munich otherwise he would accept it."

United had been linked with a move for Kane earlier in the transfer window, but instead chose to sign 20-year-old forward Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £64m plus add-ons. Hojlund joined Mason Mount and Andre Onana this summer, and Neville warned that the club's new striker and goalkeeper would both come under intense scrutiny.

He added: "It is the toughest position in Premier League football because you come under more scrutiny than any other position. Everyone will be onto [Andre] Onana if he makes a mistake or two.

"The same for Hojlund at the other end. They are the two positions that will come under scrutiny. They have to settle in and it makes me nervous about United's season because they have these two unknowns at either end of the pitch in two focal positions. They have to hit it off for United to be better. He didn't play every game for Atalanta and I am worried we have got this kid up front who has massive pressure on his shoulders.

"Rashford doesn't like playing down the middle. He wants to play off the left. Ten Hag wanted two centre forwards, he wanted a young one and Harry Kane. He needs two because Martial could leave. United don't have a centre-forward right now!"
