Guitarist and singer-songwriter Robbie Robertson, from the Canadian-American hitmaking group The Band, has died at the age of 80.

Robbie's longtime manager announced today that the rocker died on Wednesday (August 9) in Los Angeles. They have said that he died after a "long illness", according to Variety. Jared Levine, who had managed Robbie for a staggering 34 years, released a statement today, which confirmed his death. Jared explained how Robbie was surrounded by his family at the time of his death, including his wife, his ex-wife, her partner and his children.

They then added that instead of fans and mourners sending flowers, donations can be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River to "support a new Woodland Cultural Centre".

Tributes have been flooding in for Robbie on social media, with one person dubbing him a "Canadian king, a rock & roll legend in his own right, and dedicated collaborator of Dylan and Scorsese", they then added: "We're losing too many greats".
