Flavoured rums are one of the hottest drinks on the market and there's one that's fighting it's way forward for the title. Ableforth's Rumbullion! Chilli & Chocolate is a limited release of Guyanese flavoured rum that is worth snapping up.

I recently tried it after discovering my love of Project #173 rums, particularly the Butterscotch version, and I daresay I like Rumbullion's take on Chocolate rum more than my beloved Project #173. Ableforth's limited edition rum brings in the flavour of chilli to complement the chocolate notes which has been seen across recipes for many years.

I think it works really well. It's not overly hot, using chipotle chillies and jalapeño chillies to bring the heat which I think makes it accessible to a wider audience.

I think with any rum that is over £25 a bottle it's worth tasting it without a mixer to really appreciate it, otherwise I would recommend going for a cheaper option as you're not going to properly taste the drink. So I had this rum first neat and then over ice - typically I prefer my drinks on ice as I like it to be colder.

When I first raised this rum to my nose I didn't notice any scent of chilli or chocolate. Instead it was a very strong smell of cola cubes, I felt like I'd walked into an old fashioned sweet shop.

You don't notice the chilli flavour immediately when you take a sip, instead it's a tingle that plays across your tongue. I think this makes for a unique and quite pleasant experience.

The chocolate flavour isn't overly strong, but it leaves a mouthfeel reminiscent of chocolate around your mouth. This creamy and rich finish really balances out the flavour and effect of the drink.

I think this is a great autumnal drink more than summer, although with it being part of a limited edition run it's worth getting your hands on it as soon as possible. You can get it at a number of retailers, including Amazon, Master of Malt and Ocado, from £26.95.
