Greenwood makes 'transfer preference' clear with Man Utd weighing up decision

Mason Greenwood has reportedly made it known that he wants to remain in England should Manchester United sanction a loan exit.

The Red Devils are set to make a decision on their academy graduate, who faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford. Greenwood, 21, hasn't played for United for well over a year after being charged for attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped those charges in February this year and Greenwood is looking to get his career back on track. United opted to begin their own investigation and a conclusion is imminent, but the player would rather not relocate given he's just had a young child, reports the Express.

United could send the player out on loan with a firm backlash expected from fans up and down the country. Clubs from abroad, particularly in Italy, have expressed an interested in taking Greenwood, but the 21-year-old favours a stay in his homeland.

Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag, who is yet to have Greenwood at his disposal having inherited the situation, confirmed that any decision will rest with the club. He said: "It's a club decision. Of course I have said my ideas and opinions but it's a club decision. We all have to accept that." The Dutchman also added: "I can't say so much about it. But what I say is I shared my opinion about it so let's see what's going to happen and what the decision will be."

Greenwood has played over 100 times for the Premier League outfit since making his debut in 2019, scoring on 35 occasions. He's also picked up one cap for England. The 21-year-old has been spotted training as he attempts to remain in shape ahead of a possible return.

Greenwood, a product of Manchester United's academy, made his debut for the club as a teenager during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time as manager. He scored his first senior goal for the club in September 2019, shortly before his 18th birthday.

The Yorkshire-born player has scored 35 goals in 129 games for the Red Devils, with 22 of those goals coming in the Premier League. He also has one senior cap for England, coming on as a substitute against Iceland in 2020.

Greenwood's most recent season around United's first team saw him score six goals in 24 appearances, with five of those goals coming in the Premier League. His most recent appearance came in a 1-0 victory over West Ham in January 2022.

United have added Rasmus Hojlund in attack in a deal worth over £70m. Marcus Rashford was the club's top scorer last term, notching 30 times, whilst other forwards like Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho face uncertain futures in Manchester.
