Going out for dinner is one of life's little pleasures. Whether it's a treat after a long day or a big celebration, we all expect a pleasant experience and to be looked after by staff - not to be insulted by an employee.

Australian restaurant The Cornish Arms has come under fire after one member of staff appeared to let their feelings loose after a customer simply asked for some ice cubes in their wine. The employee allegedly wrote a passive aggressive note on the customers receipt, leaving the diner shocked at the unnecessary insult after a seemingly reasonable request.

The unimpressed diner took to social media to reveal the receipt, which read: "Terre Forte Pinot Grigio – ice in it f**king bogans." The word 'bogan' is Australian slang for a person whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour are considered unrefined or unsophisticated.

The strange remark has caused a stir with others online, with some arguing the staff member was "lacking basic human skills".

The mortified customer posted the receipt on Reddit, and people have been quick to chime in with how disrespectful the message seemed. One user commented: "If you can't do your job without showing basic human respect, you need to find an industry that limits your contact with the public," while another added: "At the end of the day, doesn't matter what's 'expected' or 'appropriate'. The customer has paid for it and can drink it however they like."

But others saw the funny side, as one person joked: "This is absolutely hilarious but also very amateur to leave the notes on the receipt for the customer," and another calling the server a "legend" for what they did.

The restaurant told 7News: "Staff were spoken to and reminded of their workplace responsibilities and the junior staff member then came forward to management and was very apologetic, not realising it would print on the customer's receipt. She has been spoken to and placed on a three-month probation.

"Her comment in no way reflects the values of The Cornish Arms and we will continue to educate and train staff to ensure the business evolves. The customer has since been spoken with and will be returning for a meal on us soon."

The Mirror reached out to The Cornish Arms for further comment.
