A former magician who was convicted of child sex offences has been left seriously injured in a prison attack.

Paul McKee, who performed under the name Professor Paulous, was left with a broken jaw after being punched by another inmate, who told him: "That's what you get for fiddling with kids."

The Liverpool Echo reports that he once worked as a children's entertainer to the stars, having performed for soap actors and at private parties for Liverpool FC footballers. But he was secretly a prolific child sex offender, subjecting several young girls to a catalogue of harrowing abuse over the course of nearly 25 years.

The 57-year-old - who is currently of no fixed address but formerly of Wallasey Village, Wirral - was extradited back to the UK from Thailand to face justice, after his activities in Asia being described as "suspicious at the very least". McKee could now spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was jailed for 30 years at Liverpool Crown Court last month.

The same court heard yesterday afternoon that he was subjected to a beating behind bars at the hands of fellow sex offender Ryan Kenny on February 15 this year. The incident at HMP Altcourse was caught on CCTV and showed him being punched once from behind. Christopher Hopkins, prosecuting, described how McKee then fell and suffered injuries including a fractured jaw, ribs and vertebrae. Prison guards then intervened, at which point Kenny said: "That's what you get for fiddling with kids."

A trial previously heard that McKee's offending persisted between the mid-1980s and late 2000s, with some of the children only being toddlers at the time they were abused and several of the assaults being filmed with a camcorder. After his offences were eventually reported to the police in 2017, complainants described in "harrowing, dark and disturbing" accounts how he "treated them like little sex slaves" when they were aged as young as two.

McKee, who is a Mormon from a religious family with "strong links to the Church of the Latter Day Saints", was by now living in Thailand and had to be returned to this country in order to face a jury. When his brother messaged him on Facebook after learning of the allegations, the serial sex offender replied saying he was "sorry for what he had and done and was asking for God's forgiveness".

Mr Roberts told the court that McKee was a "predatory paedophile capable of extreme acts of violence against very young children" and had subjected the victims to a "prolonged, vicious campaign of abuse". The prosecutor detailed gratuitous acts of "brutal and profound degradation" which were "designed to emasculate and humiliate".

During this time, McKee was known to allow young children to "come and go" to his house as they pleased and permitted them to drink and smoke on his premises from an early age. The ECHO was told he kept a pig in his back garden as well as having marmoset monkeys, meerkats and sugar gliders as pets - with animals also being held in a cupboard underneath his stairs.

Judge David Swinnerton told McKee in his sentencing remarks: "You created an environment in the house where children wanted to come. You had animals - a pig, monkeys. (Children) were allowed to come and go. In their teens, they were allowed to drink and smoke."

The judge added that one witness described McKee's home as "a place where it was hard to discern an adult in charge".

The ECHO understands that the Royal Thai Police kept McKee under surveillance for two months before his arrest in September last year after receiving a tipoff from a friend as to his whereabouts in the north eastern part of the country, near to the border with Laos. He was eventually returned to the UK on Christmas Eve.

McKee - who has no previous convictions - was convicted of 13 child sexual offences, including rape and sexual assault, after a trial. Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool, he was jailed for 30 years, of which he must serve at least two thirds before becoming eligible for release - and handed an additional four-year licence period.

Sentencing, Judge Swinnerton said: "You were highly emotionally manipulative, controlling and physically violent. You systematically and repeatedly subjected them all to an appalling catalogue of sexual abuse and rape.

"Throughout the trial, the pain and psychological damage that you have caused to those seven women was raw and obvious. I once again pay tribute to them for their strength in coming forward and their determination and courage in giving evidence.

"You, on the other hand, have shown not one sign of remorse. You do not seem to experience shame, guilt, remorse or empathy - you acted on your own sexual desires with no care for the traumatic impact on the children you abused."

Kenny, of no fixed address, admitted wounding with intent in relation to the assault on him on Monday. Appearing in court via video link, the 29-year-old was handed a further 18 months behind bars by Judge Robert Trevor-Jones.

He was serving a 28-month stretch at the time, having been banned from Liverpool city centre after a spate of offending which also saw him sexually assault a young student, steal Toblerones from B&M and smash his way into Specsavers during a burglary. Despite this, the "drunk nuisance" told a judge: "I'm going back to town whether you like it or not."
