Cleaning your utensils each and every day is important, and you'll take extra care when it comes to the things that your little ones use, as you'll want them to be as fresh and clean as possible. Whether you pop their lunchboxes in the dishwasher or clean them by hand, you'll be able to see that they're mould-free, leaving you safe in the knowledge that your child is eating from something that's hygienic.

But what would you do if, unbeknownst to you, there was a section of your kid's lunchbox that was teeming with black mould? You'd be mortified, and desperate to clean it, or bin it and replace it as soon as possible. That's what one mum found when she peeled away the inner section that was glued to the plastic box itself - and her jaw dropped.

Grace Bollen was cleaning out the lunchboxes her children were using when she made a grim discovery, and is warning other parents to do similar checks to the one she did to avoid things like this from happening. She found a load of black mould growth underneath the surface of the lunchbox, which was spick-and-span, and she shared that she'd only been using them for less than a year.

Taking to Facebook, she posted pictures of the lunchboxes filled with mould, explaining that she'd been hand washing them each night and leaving them open so they'd dry. She wanted to share the pictures to highlight the potential dangers of this specific type of lunchbox, as of course, all parts cannot be accessed - and ingesting mould can cause someone to be very sick, with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. How severe the symptoms are will depend on how much mould you've eaten, as well as your age and overall health.

Grace later decided to contact the manufacturers of the lunchboxes and they said they'd be doing their best to ensure that the products were watertight moving forward. The mum also recommended holding the lunchboxes up to the light, so that if there was any mould growth, you may be able to spot it more easily.
