A mum claims she was left positively aghast after spotting a 'cheeky' elderly lady attempting to make off with one of her front garden ornaments and headed outside to have a word. According to this woman, she has a couple of little animal ornaments next to the plant pot by her front door. These were picked out by her children, who she says consider the small statues to be theirs.

After noticing somebody loitering outside her home, she opened the blinds to see what was going on. Much to her astonishment, she 'caught an elderly lady red-handed putting the zebra in her bag'.

Taking to Mumsnet, the amused woman, who goes by the username Kinelll, chuckled: "To be honest I'm surprised they've lasted as long as they have around here but I didn't expect the culprit to be an elderly woman."

After heading out of the front door to have a word, she was, fortunately, able to get the pinched zebra back, but not before the cheeky stranger attempted to 'style it out'.

She continued: "I said if she liked it then she should go and buy one from Poundstretcher down the road. She tried to style it out by saying she thought it had been put out to take but there was no chance that anybody would think that, it's part of a little display."

The perplexed mum went on to clarify that she'd never seen the OAP 'opportunist' in her life, and jokily wondered whether her bags were full of 'her other stolen knick-knacks'.

One fellow Mumsnet user laughed: "It’s always the ones you wouldn’t expect, that's how they get away with it.... usually!"

Another commented: "I remember my student days working in a supermarket and we had plenty of little old lady shoplifters. They were especially fond of cheese, coffee chocolate, and meat."
