The washout UK summer is set to continue after predictions that July may end up being the wettest in over a decade.

Warm and dry weather has been vetoed for the first half of the month, the Met Office said, as experts say conditions look "unsettled" with hot temperatures "unlikely". It follows the hottest June on record, and what scientists predict to be the hottest July too as countries around the world have baked in scorching heat creeping as high as the 50C mark.

Speaking of the latest forecast Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vaultrey said: "A few brighter spells are trying to poke their way through and particularly as we head into the afternoon - south west Wales into south west England could see temperatures climbing more towards 20C, 21C.

"Overall, Tuesday is a slightly calmer day, particularly in terms of wind speeds, but there will be some showers around at times - easing out into the afternoon and certainly into the evening for parts of Wales and southern parts of England."

The Met Office forecaster continued: "Temperatures will be holding between 19C to 23C for UK on Tuesday." The prospect of 23C sunshine will please many, and Mr Vaultrey adds: "And where we do see sunnier spells just trying to poke through into the afternoon hopefully that will allow for a slightly more pleasant feel of things."

But the Met Office has also predicted rainy spells and showers across many regions up until next weekend. It warns: "Unsettled on Wednesday with more persistent rain and heavy showers accompanied by stronger winds. A mixture of sunshine and showers to follow on Thursday and Friday. Feeling cool throughout."

Looking ahead to August, from August 4 onwards, the forecasting agency adds: "Showery conditions are likely, along with the risk of longer spells of rain and stronger winds at times too."

Looking ahead from August 14, the Met Office says: "During the second half of August, changeable weather is expected across the UK. Unsettled at times, with a mixture of rain and showers for many areas. Some shorter-lived periods of drier, more settled weather are also likely, particularly later in the month. These may bring some warmer days."

The Met Office has warned this month is likely to become the wettest July for 14 years.
