Former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has opened up on his desire to retire alongside Lionel Messi.

Suarez and Messi were teammates at Barcelona from 2014-20 and formed one of the most prolific striker partnerships in Europe. The duo won 13 major trophies, including four La Liga titles and one Champions League trophy.

After leaving Barcelona, Suarez signed for Atletico Madrid and won another Spanish league title. He left Europe to return to South America and sign for Uruguayan club Nacional in 2022, and would then move to Brazil with Gremio in January on a two-year deal.

Miami were heavily linked with signing Suarez earlier in the summer after the deals to sign Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. However, it seems that a potential deal is no longer likely to happen and that Suarez will remain in Brazil.

The impact has already been noticed since Messi arrived at Miami. In his two appearances for the club, the Argentina legend has scored three goals including one on debut and two in a 4-0 win over Atlanta United, both coming in the Leagues Cup.

Miami underwent many preparations before the official arrival of Messi. The club installed bleachers in all four corners of the DRV PNK Stadium to add 3,000 extra seats to increase the overall capacity up to 21,000 people.

Messi, Busquets, Alba and Suarez all played alongside one another at Barcelona. During Suarez’s time at the Camp Nou, he and Messi became close friends and have remained so to the present day.

Now 36, Suarez has admitted that he would like to retire alongside Messi at the same club one day. However, it remains to be seen what the future exactly holds for the striker but it’s clear that he would like to reunite with his former teammate one day.

“With Messi, we dream of retiring together”, Suarez told the Uruguayan TV show Punto Penal.

“It was something that we always planned when we were at Barcelona. And from one year to the next I went to Atletico and he went to PSG. We dreamed of it and we talked about it that after Barcelona we would go to the United States and nothing happened at the time.

“Now he made the decision to go there and from what you can see, he looks happy and we hope that at some point that possibility will occur.”
