Prince Harry showed subtle signals that proved a huge change in his attitude in the days after he married Meghan Markle, a body language expert has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their first public appearance as a married couple on May 22, 2018. They put on a sweet display when they arrived at Buckingham Palace for a garden party to celebrate Charles' 70th birthday. Wearing a £590 'Flavia' nude shift dress from Goat along with the nude tights and pumps so favoured by sister-in-law Kate, Meghan showed "grown-up elegance and glamour", according to Judi James.

On his part, Harry appeared to get back into his "alpha role" and looked "relaxed" while standing in front of his wife. Ms James said: "There's an air of grown-up elegance and glamour about Meghan's Audrey Hepburn-chic outfit and although she's teamed it with some perfectly-poised and rather high-status body language as she walks with Harry it's also great to see the more accessible, down-to-earth-giggly and undeniably happy version of the new HRH is still very much on display too.

"With her head shaded by her large, angled hat she holds Harry's arm for balance as she descends the stairs in her heeled court shoes. The clutch bag was a favourite of Kate Middleton's and like Kate, carried it as a small body barrier just below her waist.

"That clutch bag positioning could be strategic. One annoying and embarrassing trait once you marry is that everyone starts asking when you're going to have a baby and attention does start to focus on the tummy area. Her more demure pose here puts Harry back into the same alpha role that we saw when he danced around his new bride to usher her into the E-type after the wedding ceremony.

"Having recovered from his wedding day jitters he looks relaxed and happy striding slightly in front of Meghan with his splayed torso and top hat in one hand. The second picture shows a much less formal and more giggly version of Meghan that defines her as a radiant and super-happy new royal bride."

"Body language like this creates a strong tie-sign of direct communication with the public and the friendly, status-lowering signals on display show she's no intention of getting too grand in her new royal role. She lifts her clutch bag higher here in a cutely mock-defensive gesture and self-diminishes by pulling her upper arms into her torso to show lowered status and raised happiness. Her facial expression registers over-spilling delight here, so much so that she brings one hand up close to her face in a cut-off 'hiding' gesture as though made shy by the strength of her own emotions."
