Love Island's Catherine breaks silence on Elom split after savage break up

Love Island's Catherine has opened up about why she and Elom decided to call time on their relationship.

The couple were booted off the show earlier this month before splitting up when they got back to the UK. Catherine, 22, had her head turned by Elom, also 22, in Casa Amor and ended up bringing the masseuse back to the main villa - leaving her beau, Scott, devastated.

However, it wasn't to be for the new couple as they were sent packing after being voted one of the least popular pairings. Speaking about their relationship now, Catherine said the pressures of the reality series had become an issue, revealing: "Me and Elom, we get along. But we were already going through the bombshell comments and dealing with that."

She added to new! magazine: "So our relationship already had holes in it, but early on we decided that we were going to be friends."

The couple were marred with accusations of a 'showmance' when they were in the villa before a source told The Sun last week: “The pair struggled to make it work in the real world and barely saw each other since the show ended.

“They kept up a bit of a pretence, while they did the podcast circuit, but everyone knew it was over before it even really started.

“Catherine's sister made no secret about her feelings towards Elom so it's no surprise she cooled things off straight away.”

Catherine entered the villa as one of the original Islanders when she was paired with Andre. She also fancied Zach, but that spark fizzled when he went off with Molly. The real estate agent later went back with Andre, but he was dumped from the Island.

Scott then entered the villa and made it clear Catherine was the girl for him. However, she had her doubts over at Casa Amor and decided to get to know Elom - while Scott stayed loyal.

The footballer recently gave an update on a possible reunion with his ex after fans were keen to know if there was still a spark. In a recent Q&A, Catherine hinted that she wanted to try again with Scott, prompting viewers to speculate the pair could get back together.

Speaking on Aftersun, Scott said: "Yeah me and Catherine are friends now. I just want to put it out there. This is a reality show, you only see an hour of every day. I’ve seen a little bit of what’s been said to Catherine and it’s not right at all. I just wanna put that out there and stick up for her sort of thing because we did get on as friends before she left. We’re in a good place with it."

The Love Island finale is on ITV2 on Monday July 31 at 9pm
