A talented young cyclist has died aged just 17 after being hit by a car while out training.

Magnus White was riding near his home in Boulder, Colorado, when the accident happened. He was in training to represent the US in the Junior Men’s Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships, which will take place in Glasgow next month.

The rising star won the 2021 Junior 17-18 Cyclocross National Championships and was part of the USA Cycling National Team for European Cyclocross racing. Earlier this year he earned a place on the USA Mountain Bike World Championship team.

A statement released by USA Cycling read: "White fell in love with cycling at an early age through Boulder Junior Cycling. He was a rising star in the off-road cycling scene and his passion for cycling was evident through his racing and camaraderie with his teammates and local community. The summer of 2023 marked a new chapter for White, where he earned a spot on the Mountain Bike World Championships team.

Magus started cycling when he was just 10 and his talent was quickly apparent. He represented his local community before moving up the ranks to ride for the US.

Magnus' friends have set up a JustGiving page to help his family financially while they deal with his tragic death.

On the page, the mum of one of his teammates writes: "Magnus was taken from us while doing what he loved most, riding his bike. Magnus’s family is strong, but support from their community will go a long way to give them time to grieve.

"Magnus’s greatest joy in life was cycling after playing flag football when he was younger. He was also an accomplished skier.

"Magnus’s journey in cycling was driven by a tireless work ethic and a deep desire to achieve his personal best. He was proud to represent his community and country around the world. Magnus accomplished many of the goals he set for himself.

"Magnus leaves behind his parents Jill and Michael and his brother Eero and countless friends worldwide. The family will use any contributions as needed for support of moving through this tragic period. Please join us in remembering Magnus and supporting his family during this difficult time."
