A “medical emergency” on board an easyJet flight to Edinburgh has forced it to be diverted to Liverpool airport.

The EZY312 flight, from London Stansted, that departed at around 5.20pm, suddenly diverted to Liverpool John Lennon whilst flying over the Peak District.

The flight path shows how the aircraft then turned and flew over Manchester before landing at Liverpool John Lennon airport shortly after 6pm. An easyJet spokesman confirmed that the plane had been diverted due to a “medical emergency”.

He told The Mirror: “We can confirm that flight EZY312 from London Stansted to Edinburgh this evening diverted to Liverpool due to a passenger onboard requiring urgent medical assistance. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority.”

A RadarBox map showed the plane's route from Stansted heading north and then suddenly taking a left and landing at Liverpool John Lennon airport. And easyJet's live flight checker online said that a second follow-on flight was organised for passengers to eventually reach Edinburgh and that the diversion was due to a "passenger incident" on board.

The update read: "We’re very sorry that your flight has now been diverted to Liverpool. This is due to a passenger incident. The disruption to your flight is outside of our control and is considered to be an extraordinary circumstance."

The plane from Liverpool departed at 7.20pm and arrived in Edinburgh at 8.09pm, according to the easyJet live flight information. It comes two after an easyJet flight was forced to land back at Gatwick Airport minutes after take-off before being escorted off the runway by emergency vehicles.

Flight EZY6427 was en route to Dubrovnik, Croatia - but it's understood it reverted to emergency protocol due to a hydraulic issue, with flight deck fearing they may have damaged landing gear. It set off at around 8.12am last Friday, with flight tracker Flight Radar showing the Airbus A320-214's flight path beginning as normal before circling several times near Crowborough before coming back to land at Gatwick.
