'Creepy, perverted' sign aimed at Women's World Cup star slammed by fans

A 'creepy' sign aimed at Switzerland footballer Alisha Lehmann has been blasted by fans who accused the BBC of giving 'perverted' airtime to a man during the Women's World Cup.

As Aston Villa and Swiss striker Lehmann was substituted onto the pitch in the 71st minute, BBC cameras panned and showed a fan's sign with a message that read: "Alisha Lehmann sign my belly so I can be seen on telley."

And fans watching on BBC Two were not impressed with the footage and took to social media to blast the moment the man was given airtime, saying men asking for women to touch their bodies in any way should not be given the promotion.

Lehmann is subject to a lot of attention both from fans in the stands and online, but fans are beginning to highlight the need for the attention to move from male fans holding signs.

The main tweet gaining traction on social media says: "Media/Broadcasters: Please don't show creepy dudes with signs asking for Alisha Lehmann to "please sign their belly so they can be seen on telly".

"They are weird perverts and would think we're better than to promote them.

"It's bad enough promoting the pressurizing, entitled "Can I Have Your..." signs but promoting grown dudes asking a young woman to touch their bodies is a bit of a low."

Another fan tweeted to get the perspective of other supporters: "Thoughts on Alisha Lehmann? It’s a debate for women’s football and modern day feminism. But that placard of her horny fans. Find it an unnecessary distraction tbh."

Lehmann is the world's most followed female footballer on Instagram with more than 13.4m followers.

She has previously spoken about her huge online following, saying: "I appreciate the support so much, it gives me strength on pitch.

"But I really don't think about it. I don't think that I'm better than anyone else, I come from humble beginnings with how I grew up with my family in Switzerland.

"I don't see myself as someone with loads of followers on social media, obviously I'm proud it - alongside my football - but it doesn't change anything."
