Emmerdale's Cain's troubled past - Life-threatening health issue to unknown kids

Emmerdale's Cain Dingle has become a staple of the village over the years, having been on the ITV soap for over 20 years.

Jeff Hordley took on the role in 2000, and he's gone on to become one of the show's key stars - with his character Cain always at the centre of drama.

There's been a lot of it too involving him and the Dingles, from deaths and shocking crimes, to affairs, weddings, babies and heartbreak.

Cain has had many a twist over the past 23 years, some of which he did not see coming - even if viewers did. Here we take a look back at some of his biggest moments...

Secret children

It's a familiar theme with Cain's children that he didn't seem to know they existed, or that there was a chance they were not his.

This wasn't the case for his young son Kyle, while he got teenager Amy Wyatt pregnant and then tried to make her have an abortion.

Cain's oldest son is Nate Robinson. Cain had no idea his teenage love was pregnant, and Cara raised his child in secret and never saw him again - that was until Nate went looking for Cain and revealed his true identity, after plotting revenge.

Nate had wrongly believed Cain didn't want to know, unaware he actually did not know about him. Similarly, after a fling with his own cousin Charity Dingle when they were teens, the pair had a daughter, Debbie, who was adopted - and Cain did not meet her until years later.

His youngest son Isaac, who he shares with wife Moira Dingle, was initially believed to be Pete Barton's child, before Cain was proven to be his father with a DNA test.

Life-threatening health scare

Cain was left fearing for his life not too long ago, after a worrying health diagnosis. Cain was told by doctors in 2014 that he had a brain aneurysm, leaving him stunned. He was advised to have emergency surgery.

Cain ended up collapsing after his diagnosis, and went on to have the operation before recovering.

Whodunnit

Fans may remember a time where the village hated Cain, including those close to him. In fact his actions led to a whodunnit that saw him attacked and left for dead.

A number of suspects were revealed with arrests made as he fought for his life. It turned out to be his own father Zak Dingle who was the culprit.

Life of crime

Cain has always been up to no good ever since he arrived in 2000. He's had a few stints in prison, while he has managed to get away with a lot of his crimes.

If there's ever a dodgy Dingle set-up, Cain is bound to be involved somehow while in recent years he's been seen to discourage his relatives from that life. That said, he found himself in prison for murder last year, covering for his young son Kyle who accidentally killed Al Chapman.

His criminal ways were explained late last year in a flashback episode, that detailed the moment Cain's life went off track in his teens. He covered for his half-brother Caleb Miligan when he stole a car and sped off in it, and it resulted in him being sent to prison.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
