A father is feared dead after a crocodile ferociously attacked him while taking a dip in a river with his little boy.

Redi Kardinata's bathing trip with his 11-year-old son Niko Alven Dinata turned into a nightmare when the reptile emerged out of nowhere. Niko took the short trip back home to fetch a bar of soap and when he got back to the Muara Sakai Inderapura River, he saw a reptile thrashing in the shallows with his father struggling to escape.

The reptile disappeared into the depths with the man in its jaws and neither have been since. Rescue teams are desperately searching the waters today with footage showing them in a speedboat churning up the water to try and flush out the crocodile or make a corpse surface.

"The victim was fishing in the river and then began bathing in the water. He was with his child, Niko, who is 11 years old", Defrisiswardi, Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division at the Pessel District Disaster Management Agency said.

He continued: "The victim ordered his son to bring him soap. When Niko returned to bring the soap, the boy saw his father being attacked by an aggressive crocodile. Residents immediately approached Niko who was screaming hysterically. However, the victim's body was no longer visible on the surface of the river. Only waves of water were visible, like traces of crocodile movements."

Defrisiswardi said they believe the crocodile is still at large in the area close to the attack and they are "desperately" searching for it. The Indonesian archipelago is home to 14 types of crocs, with a large population of extremely large and violent estuarine crocodiles that flourish in the region's climate.

Conservations believe that crocodiles have been driven further inland closer to villages due to overfishing reducing the crocodiles' natural food supplies combined with habitat loss from the development of coastal areas into farms. With uneducated locals in the developing country still using rivers for bathing and primitive fishing, the deadly combination of factors has led to rising numbers of crocodile attacks.

In May, a mother and her child had a miraculous escape after they were dragged away by a massive crocodile while washing clothes at another river in Indonesia. The unnamed woman went to the Marbau River in North Sumatra to wash the family's laundry, while her nine-year-old daughter tagged along to play in the water. As she was washing her clothes, she suddenly saw the beast had grabbed her daughter. As she was screaming for help the reptile then grabbed her too. But incredibly a local saved the pair who survived the terrifying ordeal.
