Wrexham's Mullin gives hospital update after Man Utd star's "reckless" challenge

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin is on the mend after a collision with Nathan Bishop left the star man with a punctured lung.

Mullin shared a photo from his hospital bed, in which he is wearing an oxygen mask, adding the message: "Thank you for all your messages! All good here!". He has been receiving treatment after the incident during a friendly in San Diego, which Wrexham won 3-1.

Young goalkeeper Bishop escaped a red card for the challenge, which left Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson fuming. However, the 23-year-old - who was booed by sections of the crowd in the US - has now penned an apology to his opponent.

“I’m fuming about it, I’ve got to be honest with you," Parkinson said of the foul. "It was a clumsy, reckless, challenge in a pre-season game and I’m not happy with it at all.

“I haven’t seen the goalie and he’s probably best steering clear of us for the time being because we’re not very happy. It should have been a straight red. If it’s not denying a goal scoring opportunity it’s still a dangerous challenge, so if you add the two scenarios together he should have been off the pitch.

“It’s a dangerous challenge and obviously Paul Mullin is our talisman. The way the lads responded after that I thought was outstanding. That’s what we’re all about as a group - resilience, sticking together. And that’s what we showed.”

"Just wanted to share my sincerest apologies to @PMullin7," Bishop wrote on Twitter. "A complete misjudgement and a genuine accident with 0 malicious intent at all! Wishing you the speediest recovery and hope to see you back scoring goals as soon as possible!"

Man Utd named a youthful XI for the Wrexham game, with their first-team due to play Real Madrid in Houston on Wednesday. Bishop was joined by fellow academy talents including Hannibal and Shola Shoretire, while veteran defender Jonny Evans added experience after recently arriving on a short-term deal.

Wrexham led 2-1 at the break, with Marc Jurado scoring United's goal. They then extended their lead in the second period after Dan Gore's red card left the Premier League side a man down.

“We just got a call from the hospital to say there’s a small puncture in his lung," Parkinson said of Mullin. "It’ll probably be tomorrow morning before we get the specialist to have a look at it.

“I think when you’ve got a punctured lung and you’ve got 10 days to stay fit you’re saying no [to being fit for the start of the season]. We’ve got options, but we can’t hide away from it - Mulls is outstanding."
