How often do you shower? Once every couple of days? Less? Or are you more of a multiple-times-a-day person? Some people find showering a luxury experience, using all their lotions and potions and taking their time with it, but others find it more of a chore, wanting to minimise their time spent in the cubicle.

But now dermatologists have shared the actual amount of times you should be showering per week - and people are seriously shocked, sparking a huge debate among TV presenters on the US talk show Today.

One dermatologist has argued that showering should only actually be done two to three times a week, and the revelation caused a commotion.

The hosts of the show, Al Roker, Sheinelle Jones, and Dylan Dreyer discussed the topic, along with Adrianna Barrionuevo Brach, the editorial director of Shop Today. During the segment, named 'How often should you?', Brach asked the others: "How often do you think you should shower per week, according to dermatologists?"

The answer options were: "Every day, two to three times a week, five times a week, or once a week." While Dreyer said five times per week, Roker and Jones insisted on showering every day.

People were seriously shocked when they realised dermatologists actually recommend showering two to three times a week, with many assuming this wasn't hygienic, and the presenters of the show looked horrified.

The experts did caveat the recommendation, however, by sharing "It depends on the person, your lifestyle, your skin time, your age, your activity level, as well."

Roker and Jones disagreed, but the dermatologists also suggested that too much showering could lead to skin problems like dry skin and eczema.

In the comments of the video that was shared to the Today Show's Instagram page, people were seriously surprised by the take. One wrote: "That's why so many people stink", while another said: "How about every day? Can I get an Amen? Unless you're camping or sick or have kids lol."

Someone else shared: "Used to be every day. Since 2020, it's 2 to 3x a week, and my skin and scalp are healthier for it. If I work up a heavy sweat or need a refresh, I'll add an extra shower in", and another Instagram user raged: "Stop teaching this nonsense for the sake of all of us!! We don't need a musty and full of germ person around us!! Shower at least once a day… what's so hard about that!!!"
